Formed in 2004, Birdhead unites the visionary talents of Shanghai natives Song Tao (b.1979) and Ji Weiyu (b.1980). Now recognized among Asia's most influential photographers, this powerhouse duo captures their home city with unparalleled intimacy.
Realized especially for Art Basel Stories, Their striking series ‘Spark Day and Night Store (星火日夜商店)’ pulses with Shanghai's electric energy, distilling what the artists see as the city's essence: its disciplined efficiency and surprising openness layered against everyday ordinariness. The title references Shanghai's pioneering 24-hour convenience store established in 1968 — a fitting metaphor for their work, which transforms ordinary glimpses of the city into a vibrant portrayal of urban life. Like the store itself, their photographs offer not just snapshots of city life, but a complete immersion into Shanghai's beating heart.
Birdhead is represented by Flowers (Hong Kong and London), who will dedicate a solo booth to them in the Insights sector at Art Basel Hong Kong 2025.
