Running from December 4 to December 6, 2020, with preview days from December 2 to December 4, 2020, ‘OVR: Miami Beach’ featured an international lineup of 255 leading galleries from 30 countries and territories across North and South America, as well as Europe, Asia, and Africa – with 26 new participants. Galleries across all levels of the market reported strong and consistent sales over the course of five days of ‘OVR: Miami Beach.’
Over 2,500 artworks of the highest quality from new works by emerging artists to exceptional Modern highlights were presented on the platform, attracting visitors from around the globe. Art Basel introduced a new design and layout of the platform, allowing collectors to explore the viewing rooms more smoothly and access key information at a glance. A new series of video campaigns debuted on Art Basel’s Instagram to further promote this edition, including ‘1 Minute 1 Work’, wherein artists such as Marina Abramović and Hank Willis Thomas explain their work in their own words, and 'Did You Know?', 15-second videos on the new Instagram Reels channel featuring bite-sized facts and trivia about artists presented in ‘OVR: Miami Beach’.
This edition of Art Basel's Online Viewing Rooms saw galleries across regions showcase complementary presentations in both digital and physical spaces, including Zeno X Gallery in Antwerp; Mayoral in Barcelona; Esther Schipper in Berlin; SMAC Art Gallery in Cape Town; Sadie Coles HQ, Tiwani Contemporary, and White Cube in London; Central Fine, David Castillo Gallery, and Fredric Snitzer Gallery in Miami; Marianne Boesky Gallery, David Lewis, Hauser & Wirth, Tina Kim Gallery, Mary-Anne Martin Fine Art, Petzel, Jack Shainman Gallery, and David Zwirner in New York; Shulamit Nazarian in Los Angeles; A Gentil Carioca in Rio de Janeiro; Magazzino in Rome; Altman Siegel in San Francisco and Vermelho in São Paulo. In Mexico City, 10 galleries came together for ‘OVR: Miami Beach Selections at Casa Versalles’, inviting collectors to see the presentations in person while concurrently presenting them on Art Basel's digital platform.
A wide range of virtual tours and events hosted by Art Basel and the participating galleries also accompanied ‘OVR: Miami Beach’, including The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University and moniquemeloche presenting the Annual Rothschild Lecture, which this year featured a conversation between artist Ebony G. Patterson and Richard J. Powell, John Spencer Bassett Professor of American, Afro-American & African Art; a Zoom talk organized by A Gentil Carioca with the collective OPAVIVARÁ! and Keyna Eleison, Artistic Director of the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro; Kohn Gallery’s screening of Bruce Conner’s ‘A MOVIE’, described by many as the first contemporary found footage film; and a studio visit with artist Shinique Smith presented by David Castillo. Art Basel's global VIP Representatives network offered international audiences over 30 exclusive virtual Walkthroughs over the course of ‘OVR: Miami Beach.’ An online Conversations program took place in the lead-up to and during ‘OVR: Miami Beach’, featuring leading gallerists, artists, curators, and collectors discuss topics such as the art scene of Miami today, hybrid models for the art market, artists working with museums today, and the rise of regional art markets in the global art world.
