<p>These three maverick galleries are among the new exhibitors that offer truly distinctive POVs</p>

Meet the newcomers to Art Basel Miami Beach 2022

<p><a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/31505/K-Art" target="_blank">K Art</a><strong><br /></strong></p><p>It is especially impressive to learn K Art, which only opened two years ago, has already found its way from Buffalo, New York, into the hallowed halls of Art Basel Miami Beach. But its works and raison d’être are urgent, according to founder and owner Dave Kimelberg, as it is one of the only (if not the only) Native American-owned art galleries with a programmatic focus on the works of established and emerging Native American, First Nations, and Indigenous contemporary artists. </p><p>‘Indigenous art is typically seen through a historical lens, which views the Indigenous experience frozen in the past and not of the present,’ he explains. ‘Indigenous people exist in the present with unique challenges and worldviews – showing contemporary Indigenous artwork highlights the current experi­ence of Native communities and people.’</p>

<p>Inside K Art’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/miami-beach/exhibitors#90160" target="_blank">Nova sector</a> booth, expect to see carved fish sculptures from emerging Iñupiaq artist&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/stories/erin-ggaadimits-ivalu-gingrich-indigenous-artist-pays-homage-to-her-land" target="_blank">Erin Gingrich</a>, which, Kimelberg says, reflect her ancestors’ traditional beliefs of the value of the natural environment as gifts gath­ered from the land. Also on display are acrylic paintings by Navajo Robyn Tsinnajinnie, another emerging artist, aimed at creating conversations about power dynamics and the mistreatment of women. ‘Although historically overlooked and marginalized, Indigenous contemporary art has received new attention over the past few years and is beginning to receive due credit,’ explains Kimelberg, himself an enrolled member of the Seneca Nation of Indians (Bear clan). ‘We view our inclusion as an important movement forward in elevating Indigenous contemporary artwork on an international stage and we are honored to have this opportunity.’</p>

<p><strong>Rolf Art Gallery</strong></p><p>This year, Rolf Art Gallery, Argentina’s only gallery specializing in technical images with a focus on contemporary Latin American visual arts, makes their Art Basel Miami Beach debut. Founder and director Giordana Braun shares the 1987 legacy that is ‘Parquedades: Escenas de Parque para una Actriz, Video y Música’ (‘Scenes From a Park for an Actress, Video and Music’). Conceived by José Alejandro Restrepo, recognized as the forefather of video art and audiovisual installation in Latin America, and performed by Colombian María Teresa Hincapié, a pioneer in performance art in the region, ‘Parquedades’, Braun explains, ‘is one of the earliest expressions of long-lasting experimental video performance exercises in Colombia, which revealed the possibilities of interaction and exchange between the language of visual, technological, and performative arts.’ The recovered effort comprises the original five-channel video installation display in vintage monitors, but also the video record of a work rehearsal; vintage photographs that portray the performance; the photo-performance, composed of 12 previously unprinted photographs from Restrepo’s original negative; corresponding original vintage documentation: posters, an invitation, and the hand program; and Restrepo’s original music.</p>

<p>Lacking a linear narrative, ‘Parquedades’ reveals images of situations in the context of a park – benches, pigeons, details of a woman’s body, etc. – while Hincapié improvises onstage in real time with slow movements and gestures between the monitors. Braun says the compila­tion epitomizes her Buenos Aires-based gallery’s aim, which is to recover, promote and legitimize the work of artists who explore nontraditional formats in Latin America so they may express themselves and serve as open reflections to the world about the realities we inhabit. <p><a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/35003/Sophie-Tappeiner" target="_blank">Sophie Tappeiner</a><strong><br /></strong></p><p>Based in Vienna, Sophie Tappeiner gallery is known for what its namesake owner/founder describes as a ‘strong focus on intersectional feminism, the body, and how our being is constituted by the world around us and vice versa’. She says her hope is that its programs ‘facilitate a posi­tive and responsible contribution to cultural, societal, political shifts and progress’. Her first step toward that goal at Art Basel Miami Beach is happening in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/miami-beach/exhibitors#90160" target="_blank">Positions sector</a>, which is dedicated to young galleries show­casing solo presentations by emerging artists. Tappeiner ‘tapped’ Berlin-based painter Sophie Reinhold for this premiere.</p>

<p>It will not be difficult to miss the display, which features 10 equal-sized paintings installed in a straight line but depicting varying styles of ornamentation as they spell out ‘depression’. As Tappeiner explains, Reinhold was born in the former German Democratic Republic, so she witnessed firsthand ‘the battle of conflictual ideologies as she grew up between two great narratives or promises: socialism and capitalism. The surfaces of her paintings, reliefs built up with marble powder, negotiate the narrative potential of images, how systems manifest themselves and the writing of histories in general.’</p><p>Tappeiner says she trusts Reinhold’s work will clearly get its message across, even in the fair’s variegated environs. ‘I’m really looking forward to introducing Sophie Reinhold’s work to new audiences as well as seeing how the gallery and its program engage with this new context,’ she says. ‘The works always resonate in different ways according to where they’re exhibited, and I’m so curious to hear how they’re perceived at Art Basel Miami Beach.’</p><p>This article was originally commissioned for the<em>&nbsp;Art Basel Miami Beach&nbsp;</em>magazine 2022.</p><p>Captions for full-bleed images: 1.
