What does the word ‘Paris’ evoke for you?
A city for romantic wanderers. In contrast to the warmth of Rome, Paris has a cool beauty all of its own.
What is your first memory of Paris?
Before I stepped foot in Paris, I had watched the film Les Enfants du Paradis (1945) directed by Marcel Carné and written by Jacques Prévert, so many times. I fell in love with Jean-Louis Barrault and Paris in the 1830s. So, at the age of 20, I went looking for a time that only existed in my imagination.

A casual elegance and an appreciation for the good life.
Which famous figure best embodies Paris?
Michèle Lamy is the sexiest 80-year-old alive and could not possibly be anything other than French.

Who would be on the guest list for your dream dinner party in Paris?
My dearest friends, although that would require some plane trips.
Where do you go out in Paris?
I like meeting people for tea. Les Deux Abeilles and Le Café de Mars, on the corner of my street, are where you will find me. For dinner, I like Yen on rue Saint-Benoît.
Which artwork best represents Paris?
François-Xavier and Claude Lalanne’s creations – I absolutely love their originality and playfulness.
What is the craziest thing you’ve ever heard or seen on the streets of Paris?
This was decades ago, when I first moved to Paris. It was August, and I was walking up avenue Montaigne when, like something out of a movie, there stood Jean-Paul Belmondo dressed in a beautiful cream-colored suit with a hat. It looked like he had stepped right out of a Jean-Luc Godard film, and a woman, who I imagine was his girlfriend, was running towards him, straight into his arms. If it had been on the screen it would not have been more perfect. I thought that I’d walked into a dream. Now, that could only have happened in Paris.
What can you only do in Paris?
Paris is a city made for walking. Each quartier has something different to offer.
What do you miss most about Paris when you are away?
My own bed.
Your best advice for those visiting the city?
If it is not too cold or wet, wander without a plan. There are so many wonderful museums, art galleries, beautiful architecture, and lovely places to hang out like a Parisian and just people watch. A classic spot is Café de Flore.
