The shiny surfaces of Jeff Koons’ sculptures have become a byword for the artist’s work. Polished to perfection, they negate the idea of manual fabrication and stand as pristine totems to human desire. Koons’ balloon dogs, dolphins, and oversized hearts capture the contemporary poetry of pop culture while taunting humans’ inner magpies. ‘Shine’ is thus an apt theme for the artist’s major retrospective upcoming at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence – one that runs through his entire oeuvre.
