‘My artistic journey began with me questioning myself and my depression,’ said Bangkok-based painter Gongkan when we visited him in his Bangkok studio for our ‘Meet the artists’ series. ‘I felt like I was stuck,’ he continued, showing us some works-in-progress. ‘I wanted to use my work as a way out, an escape from the suffering.’
Born and raised in Bangkok, Gongkan moved to New York City, where he studied art for three years. There, he immersed himself in the street art scene, carving a niche with his distinctive ‘Teleport Art’ – a series marked by figures traversing through black holes.
These black holes, a constant in his work, along with motifs drawn from nature like skies, clouds, and water – and the recurring character of a child – weave a narrative that is both personal and universal. The child, Gonkan says, ‘can be anyone. I want everyone to be able to relate to him.’
Gongkan is represented by Tang Contemporary Art (Beijing, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Seoul). His work will be on view at Art Basel Hong Kong.
