Art Basel in Hong Kong to bring together over 100 galleries with new digital and physical formats

Following a year of uncertainty and online-only initiatives, Art Basel’s show in Hong Kong will open its doors – physically and digitally – from May 19–23, 2021. The show will bring together 104 leading galleries from 23 countries, while two new features will also make their debuts: satellite booths and ‘Art Basel Live’. With the former, 56 galleries that are currently unable to travel internationally will be able to present their artists in small, curated booths staffed by local representatives appointed by Art Basel. With ‘Art Basel Live: Hong Kong’, international audiences will be welcomed remotely into the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre through a series of live broadcasts, various events, and virtual walkthroughs, as well as Online Viewing Rooms.


	The main fair will comprise its traditional three sectors, Galleries, Insights, and Discoveries, offering visitors an expansive overview of contemporary and historic positions from around the world. In the main Galleries sector, visitors can expect a new suite of paintings by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/7088/Rirkrit-Tiravanija" target="_blank">Rirkrit Tiravanija</a> presented by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/1141/Gladstone-Gallery" target="_blank">Gladstone Gallery</a> (New York City) as well as works by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/7089/Danh-Vo" target="_blank">Danh Vo</a> at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/1291/Take-Ninagawa" target="_blank">Take Ninagawa</a> (Tokyo). Galleries such as&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/1225/Proyectos-Monclova" target="_blank">Proyectos Monclova</a> (Mexico City) and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/2910/Karma" target="_blank">Karma</a> (New York City) will participate for the first time. Meanwhile, Insights – which focuses on modern art from Asia and the Asia-Pacific region – will include works by artists like&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/12201/Kimsooja" target="_blank">Kimsooja</a> at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/2177/Axel-Vervoordt-Gallery" target="_blank">Axel Vervoordt Gallery</a> (Hong Kong, Antwerp) and the radical Japanese artists Saori Akutagawa and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/43353/Yuki-Katsura" target="_blank">Yuki Katsura</a> at Nukaga Gallery (Tokyo). With its focus on emerging positions, Discoveries will showcase artists like&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/stories/bmw-art-journey-2020-winner-leelee-chan" target="_blank">Leelee Chan</a> at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/8469/Capsule-Shanghai" target="_blank">Capsule Shanghai</a> and Greg Ito at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/3053/Anat-Ebgi" target="_blank">Anat Ebgi</a> (Los Angeles), who is also a first-time participant.


	Art Basel Hong Kong 2021 will also include collective booths for the very first time as well as a new feature called the ‘Fine Art Asia Pavilion’. The Pavilion will provide a thematic showcase of antiques and objets d’art made between the 1940s, while galleries like&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/1440/Silverlens" target="_blank">Silverlens</a> (Manila) and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/1432/Rossi-Rossi" target="_blank">Rossi &amp; Rossi</a> (Hong Kong, London) have joined forces to host combined presentations. Taking this collaborative spirit an extra step further, eight Italian galleries have joined hands for one presentation.
