Carsten Höller’s works often weave scientific concepts into immersive experiences that prompt viewers to reconsider their perceptions of reality. Höller has been incorporating mushrooms into his work since the early 1990s, seeing them as fascinating portals connecting ancient shamanism and the natural world. In this surreal meditation on biology, mysticism, and perception, he fuses three species of fungi: the red-capped fly agaric, renowned for its psychoactive properties, is contrasted with the ethereal Long Net Stinkhorn and the pale Dove-colored Tricholoma. Each mushroom is sliced, cross-sectioned, and reassembled to represent different stages of growth and evolutionary time, highlighting the interplay between nature, consciousness, and spirituality.
