On the rise: Chino Amobi

<p>Chino Amobi creates worlds. An American artist of Nigerian descent, Amobi’s total installations crack open the door to an alternate universe: a place where everything is at once strange and familiar, where reality disconnects and beings dissolves, where pink neons light up cyberpunk nights.</p>

<p><em>EROICA</em>, Amobi’s science fiction narrative, forms the basis of his most recent works and exhibitions, starting with the first iteration of the project launched in 2020 at Luma Westbau in Zurich. Through this, Amobi develops the multiple facets of his artistic practice: electronic music, which first catapulted him onto the international stage, but also painting, video, and literature. Together, these various art forms physically embody the geography, temporality, atmosphere, and inhabitants of an entire world: a system of perception and thought that dazzles the spectator. </p><p>It all starts with the mysterious disappearance of the artist’s alter ego. We learn of this pivotal event through a serialized film, directed by Nathan De Paz Habib. At Art Basel Miami Beach, Amobi’s Parisian gallery, Fitzpatrick, is presenting work based around the second episode in the series. Along with the detective on the case, we discover clues left by the missing artist: a manuscript written in Mandarin, Sanskrit, and an unknown code, and then, his suicide note.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The verdict: ‘onticide’ – a term describing a state of non-existence beyond subjectivity, popularized by the Afro-pessimist thinker Calvin L. Warren. The artist’s alter ego seems to have left behind the torments of individualism to commune with the elements and shed certain beliefs to reach ecstatic states. To be fully reborn, he had to die. Only then could he abandon inherited certainties and liberate himself from restrictive Western perceptual frameworks. </p><p>As part of the fair’s Positions sector, Amobi presents an installation, resembling a domestic interior. Here the film is played on a screen atop a bookshelf, and the story continues with a series of paintings, all lit by the same pink neon lighting: an invitation to embark on a cosmic journey. </p>
