Mohamed Bourouissa and Kamel Mennour on the secret of a successful artist-gallerist relationship

When gallerist <a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/1215/kamel-mennour">Kamel Mennour</a> saw <a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/8267/Mohamed-Bourouissa">Mohamed Bourouissa</a>’s video Temps Mort (2009) for the first time, he became ‘obsessed’, he says, with learning more about the Franco-Algerian artist’s work. The piece – shot on mobile phones by two inmates – is both exemplary of Bourouissa’s interest in documenting marginal realities and Mennour’s affinity with artistic positions that expand on societal and philosophical questions. Almost a decade, and more than twenty solo shows later (four of which took place at Mennour’s gallery), the two men reflect on their trajectory and pause to consider the secret of a successful artist-gallerist partnership.
