How to update museums for the 21st Century 

The last decade has seen the emergence of new challenges for collecting institutions. Contemporary discourses demand a new reading of art history, one that can tell ‘inclusive, de-centered, de-colonialized, and timely stories’, says author and cultural strategy consultant András Szántó, the chair of the Museum Talk | The Collecting Institution: Acquisitions and Representations panel.The complexity of the mechanisms forging museums’ identities – including their acquisition policies and structural expansion – has also grown exponentially. Globalization has blurred the line between cultural centers and the so-called peripheries, and the rise in popularity of ephemeral and performative practices is forcing museum professionals to redefine what constitutes a collectible artwork.The museum directors speaking on this panel are confronted with these questions on a daily basis.
