Gabriel Orozco explains why the supermarket is a perfect universe

Watch the Mexican artist discuss play, systems, and subversion with M+ Chief Curator Doryun Chong

Gabriel Orozco is a a true magpie. Moving between Japan, Bali, Mexico, and Germany, the artist has drawn on sources as varied as traditional craftmanship, found consumer products, and the application of chance to the artistic process. He sees artworks as games, testing the limits of the artworld’s system of representation. Working outside of a traditional studio, Orozco has produced pieces ranging from Balinese-inspired relief carvings to tempera paintings. Having recently acquired Orozco’s Untitled (OROXXO) (2017) – an installation in the form of a supermarket – for Hong Kong’s much-anticipated museum M+, chief curator Doryun Chong quizzes the artist on improvisation, making artworks on the streets, and why the supermarket is a perfect universe.
