Vermelho

In its 20 years of history, Vermelho has managed to establish itself as one of the main contemporary art spaces in Brazil. The gallery represents a diverse range of contemporary  renowned Brazilian and international artists, such as Rosângela Rennó, Dias & Riedweg, Carmela Gross, Claudia Andujar, as well as a new generation of artists such as Marcelo Cidade, André Komatsu, Carlos Motta and Iván Argote. More than just an exhibition space, Vermelho encourages discourses on new ideas and artistic practices from both its emerging and established artists. 

Vermelho first opened its doors in 2002 with a unique 10.000 square metre building projected by Paulo Mendes da Rocha. The space hosts two main exhibition rooms; a sculpture / installation terrace and a restaurant. Its façade serves as a multi-functional ‘canvas’, hosting over 100 site-specific works over the years. 

In addition to the gallery program, with an average of 2000 visitors a month, Vermelho has been developing since 2005 an annual non-profit performance art festival called Verbo. After ten successful editions Verbo has assured its slot in São Paulo’s cultural calendar, providing a space for an encounter between the fields of performance, dance, poetry and theatre. In 2009, Vermelho launched Tijuana, a publisher focused on artist books.
