Photo: Trevor Lloyd During the Second World War, countless works of art were destroyed and looted in fires and air raids. Caspar David Friedrich’s 19th century Romantic painting was one of the works to suffer this fate, an image of monastery ruins flanked by oak trees, set stark against white snow. The work inadvertently foretold the destruction of the war and the unspeakable losses of the time in which it vanished.
