Born 1974 in Karlsruhe, Germany Lives and works in Paris, France Ulla von Brandenburg’s work often explores how stories and rituals of the past have constituted our societies. The curtain installations are a key motif in her practice; curtains bring together her interest in the theater, notions of space, time, and movement. 7 Curtains creates a temporary soft architecture of large painted curtains that materializes the viewers’ movements as they are invited to walk through doorways created with rope. The arrangement of the curtains is reminiscent of the theater stage. Utilitarian objects interwoven within the installation imply that something could, has, or may have happened in this space. Like an intermediary positioned between illusion and real life, the curtains act like veils separating the viewer from reality.
