Anni Albers is acknowledged to be one ofthe most important textile artists of the 20thcentury. Alongside her weaving, she was anotable printmaker, designer, and teacherat Bauhaus Dessau and Black MountainCollege in North Carolina alongside herhusband Josef. Her works in both textileand print have formed the basis of numerousmuseum exhibitions. Notably, in 1949, shebecame the first designer to have a solo showat MoMA, New York.The artist’s first screenprints, made in thelate 1960s, take their inspiration from herextensive travels in Latin America. Theircompositions were informed by her wovendesigns, but it is in these screenprints thatshe developed the hard-edged geometriccompositions for which she was to becomebest-known. The first breakthrough piece wasCamino Real in 1967 which was based ona design she made for a hotel of the samename in Mexico. Using a simple triangulatedform, this print represented a radicaldeparture from earlier compositions and sether on the path to a whole new body of work.
