Lee Ufan’s “Relatum” series began in 1968. In this particular series, steel plate and stone play the role of medium. Steel plate symbolizes industrialization and in contrast, stone implies bare nature. Two mediums play opposite roles, but by placing them together in a particular settting, they are not separate but together. This ‘art of relationship’ is what artist proposes and this one world created by steel and stone and audience who meets this world can open up each individual world through different awareness at the meeting point. Location plays a crucial role in “Relatum” series. When installing this particular work, the artist usually picks “local” stone, where the work will be installed. By doing so, Lee Ufan recreates the original physical relationships between two mediums. The artist has explained that every object has its own ‘presence’, and his installations feature spatial interactions of varying proximity and contact between such presences.
