We are pleased to present two new paintings by Boyd at Art Basel | Hong Kong 2015. Through his work, Boyd re-imagines historical moments captured in archival photographs from a post-colonial perspective. Recently, Boyd has further explored the place of pop-cultural storytelling in the collective memory of historical events. In these, a painted veil of archival glue dots obscures a scene rich in narrative, resulting in a mesmerizing form of abstraction. Haunting figures are revealed only through the hundreds of pixelated 'lenses' applied to the canvas. Boyd has both Aboriginal and Pacific Islander heritage and his work traces this cultural and visual ancestry in relation to the broader history of Western art. Daniel Boyd has been exhibiting his work nationally and internationally since 2005. Boyd has held solo exhibitions at Artspace in Sydney (2013) and at the Natural History Museum in London (2012). In 2014, Boyd's work was displayed in Regarding Picasso: Contemporary Artists Responses to His Art at the Musée Picasso, Barcelona, the Moscow International Biennale for Young Arts: A Time for Dreams, Moscow, the Kochi-Muziris Biennale: Whorled Explorations, Kochi, India and the 2014 Tarrawarra Biennale, Tarrawarra. In this same year, Boyd received the Bulgari Art Award (2014), as well as two major commissions for Macquarie Bank and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. Boyd’s work has been included in notable group exhibitions in Australia, such as Future Primitive, Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne (2013), The 7th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT 7), Queensland Art Gallery / Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), Brisbane (2012) and We Call Them Pirates Out Here, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (2010).
