Karmelo Bermejo Blank, 2013 Blank canvas made of solid white acrylic paint Signed with invisible ink Accompanied by a transparent Certificate of Authenticity, printed and signed with invisible ink Installation view Yokohama Triennale, Yokohoma, Japan, 2014 The title of the piece alludes to its shape; that of an unused canvas. 'Blank' is a handcrafted white monochrome, comprised of hundreds of white paint layers which were applied over a period of six months to achieve the shape of a ready-made canvas. The monochromatic characteristics in each of its layers makes the work a genuine monochrome, unlike those obtained in the traditional way, unifying the colour in the surface of the canvas. Its authenticity as a monochrome implies is falseness as a canvas; its cloth, stretcher and staples are made of solid white paint. Blank is the trompe-l'oeil of a readymade. Blank is also a trompe-l’oeil of the absence of paint, simulated by paint.
